چکیده

Of interest in this paper are failure mode interactions when laminated fiber reinforced composites are subjected to compressive loading. Delamination, fiber kink-banding and their interactions are seen to dominate the failure response. This interaction is captured through a computational model that includes interface elements to capture delamination, and, geometric and material nonlinearity to capture kink banding. A 2D cross-section analysis is used to guide the choice of interfaces that require cohesive elements, thus reducing computational complexity. Two different stacking sequences are investigated, and their compressive strength and failure modes are compared, between prediction and experiments.

A micromechanics based analysis to predict damage initiation in compressively loaded symmetric notched multiply laminates at efevated temperature under remote biaxial loading is described. The finite element method in conjunction with the commercial code ABAQUS® is used to solve the governing system of equations. The results obtained for the predictions are compared against a set of experimenta...

‌Progressive Damage Analysis of Laminated Composites using Continuum Damage Mechanics

In this paper, progressive damage and global failure of composite laminates under quasi-static, monotonic loading are investigated using 3D continuum damage mechanics. For this purpose, a finite element program has been developed using an eight-node 2D layered element including layer-wise plate theory. Damage analysis of a single orthotropic layer under various uniform in-plane and transverse l...

Compressive response and failure of fiber reinforced unidirectional composites

The compressive response of polymer matrix fiber reinforced unidirectional composites (PMC’s) is investigated via a combination of experiment and analysis. The study accounts for the nonlinear constitutive response of the polymer matrix material and examines the effect of fiber geometric imperfections, fiber mechanical properties and fiber volume fraction on the measured compressive strength an...

Prediction of Mode II of Fracture Toughness in Laminate Composites

In this paper, effects of ply orientation of adjacent plies with (ϕ//θ) interfaces on mode II critical strain energy release rate (fracture toughness) of multidirectional (MD) laminate has been studied. Ply orientation of adjacent plies is one of the most important parameters affects the mode II critical strain energy release rate () in the initiation of the delamination. To  study this paramet...
